It is important that each student reads through our Technology policies so they have a clear understanding of the acceptable use of technology while on school grounds.
These policies can be found in the links below. Please take the time to carefully read through each one so that you are prepared for bringing your own device to school.
Information Technology (IT) Policy
Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) Policy
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Policy
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Technology Policy for Students
As a parent, the use of parental control apps for your child's school device may seem like a good idea to lock the device down while they are at school. However, these third-party parental control apps can cause issues and bring about roadblocks in getting their device online and connected to the SCAS network.
Some of these control apps often use VPNs to contact the provider to access their child safety filtering. Due to this, the device will not be able to connect to the SCAS network, as VPNs are prohibited on campus as noted in our BYOT policy. More information on VPNs can be found below.
Here is a list of some well known parental control apps to avoid for use during school hours:
Aura
Bark
Covenant Eyes
Kaspersky Safe Kids
Net Nanny
Qustodio Parental Control
**Please Note: You can still use these parental control apps outside of school, they will need to be switched off during school hours to allow for our onsite filtering to work.
As per the SCAS BYOT Policy, it is strictly prohibited for students to use VPN software at school. A VPN can be used to 'tunnel' out of the SCAS internal network and provide a path for the student to be able to reach the internet, bypassing our firewall rules and web filtering.
The core reason for blocking VPNs at SCAS is to reduce and restrict access to non-school related content such as: Games, Adult Content, Malicious Content + more
If a student requires a VPN for use at home, that is OK. However, the VPN needs to be switched off during school hours so they can access the SCAS network.
Some well known VPNs are listed below and should be avoided if it is not necessary to have it:
Nord VPN
Proton VPN
Potato VPN
Cloudflare WARP
X-VPN
Browsec VPN
Web browser extensions are addons that can be installed into web browsers to provide extra functionality. However, there are a lot of extensions that are malicious and can cause issues and compromise not only the web browser but the entire device.
This can include malware and spyware, leading to unauthorised access to personal data, login credentials and other sensitive data.
We advise heavily against installing any extensions that are not developed by a reputable source (yes that includes 100% of mini-game extensions which are strictly prohibited) such as Google or other big companies.
To raise awareness about what extensions are accessing, generally there are 3 categories that extensions will fall into regarding access to your browser and site data. You can see these before installing the extension:
Full Access: These extensions can read and change information on sites.
Access Requested: These extensions must be clicked to allow access to site data.
No Access Needed: These extensions don't need access to see and change site data.
